Advisory That Begins with Listening

Akar Counsel was built around a conviction that good advisory work starts not with frameworks, but with understanding — of the business, the family, and the circumstances that make each organisation distinct.

Our Story

Rooted in Malaysian Business, Since 2009

Akar Counsel was founded in Kuala Lumpur in 2009, at a time when several of its founding partners had each spent years working within — and alongside — Malaysian family businesses. What they found, consistently, was that the questions facing these organisations were rarely just commercial. They were personal, intergenerational, and often tangled in ways that made straightforward consulting inadequate.

The practice grew steadily, not through aggressive expansion but through relationships. Clients would return as their circumstances evolved, and they would refer others who were wrestling with similar questions. This pattern shaped the firm's character: small enough to know each client well, experienced enough to bring depth to complex situations.

Today, Akar Counsel works with a carefully managed number of client organisations at any given time. We do this intentionally — because the quality of engagement matters more to us than the volume of mandates.

Our Mission

"To help Malaysian organisations navigate complex transitions with clarity, patience, and respect for what they have built."

Our Values
  • Discretion. What clients share with us remains within the engagement.
  • Patience. We do not rush towards conclusions.
  • Honesty. We say what we observe, even when it is not what was hoped to hear.
  • Contextual sensitivity. Malaysian business culture informs how we work, not just what we recommend.

Our Standards

How We Conduct Our Work

The quality of an advisory engagement is determined less by its outputs than by the discipline with which it is conducted.

Confidentiality Protocol

All engagements are governed by a formal confidentiality agreement. Client information is never shared, referenced publicly, or used in any way outside the engagement itself.

Documented Scope Agreement

Every engagement begins with a written scope agreement. Clients know precisely what the engagement covers, what the deliverables are, and what the process will look like.

Practitioner Accountability

Named practitioners are responsible for each engagement from start to finish. Work is not delegated to junior staff without client knowledge and agreement.

Regular Progress Conversations

We schedule structured check-ins throughout every engagement, so that clients always know where things stand and can raise questions or adjustments as they arise.

Data Handling Discipline

Documents, communications, and records are managed with care and in line with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010. Retention periods are clearly defined.

Professional Development Commitment

Our practitioners maintain active engagement with professional bodies, including the Malaysian Institute of Corporate Governance and relevant industry associations.

Business Advisory in Malaysia — What We Understand About This Work

Malaysian family businesses operate within a distinctive set of conditions. They often carry deep cultural obligations alongside commercial ones. They may have leadership structures that are informal but nonetheless powerful. Succession questions can be complicated by expectations that are understood but rarely spoken aloud. Governance practices may have evolved organically in ways that served the business well when it was smaller, but that now require attention as the organisation has grown.

Akar Counsel has spent fifteen years developing the understanding and the approach needed to work within this environment. We do not impose foreign governance models or generic succession templates. We work with what is actually there — the people, the history, the relationships — and help organisations develop frameworks that are both practically sound and culturally appropriate.

This is advisory work in its original sense: advisory that informs decisions without replacing the judgment of those who must live with them. Our clients remain in control of their organisations. We help them see more clearly, think more carefully, and act with greater confidence.
