Why Akar Counsel

Considered Counsel, Grounded in Experience

We work alongside our clients, not in front of them. Our approach reflects how we understand the complexity of long-standing businesses.

Discretion as a Principle

Family business matters carry personal weight. We handle every engagement with appropriate care for both the business and the people within it.

Deep Local Understanding

Over fifteen years working within Malaysian commercial and cultural contexts gives our advisors a grounded perspective that imported frameworks rarely provide.

Unhurried, Thorough Process

We do not rush engagements. Governance and succession questions deserve the time it takes to understand them properly before recommending a path forward.

Whole-Organisation Perspective

We engage with leadership, family members, and key stakeholders — not just the principal — to develop recommendations that hold across the organisation.

Tailored Documentation

Every deliverable is written for your specific situation. We do not use generic templates as substitutes for considered analysis of your actual circumstances.

Long-Term Relationship Focus

Many of our clients return across different phases of their organisation's development. We value continuity and the understanding that comes with sustained engagement.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of organisations does Akar Counsel typically work with?
We work primarily with Malaysian family-owned businesses, multi-generational enterprises, and established private companies — particularly those at a moment of transition or reflection. Our clients tend to be organisations where relationships, reputation, and long-term continuity matter as much as short-term performance.
How does an engagement with Akar Counsel typically begin?
We begin with a conversation — unhurried and without obligation. We want to understand your situation, what you are hoping to work through, and whether our approach feels like a suitable fit. Only after that exchange do we propose a structured engagement.
How long do engagements typically take?
It depends on the nature of the work. Corporate Governance Reviews typically span nine to twelve weeks. Family Business Counsel engagements usually run four to seven months. Generational Transition Advisory typically covers three to five months. All timelines include regular check-ins and are adjusted as understanding deepens.
Are your fees fixed or variable?
Our listed fees reflect standard engagements. Family Business Counsel is MYR 3,490; Corporate Governance Review is MYR 2,840; Generational Transition Advisory is MYR 540. Where a client's situation requires a different scope, we discuss this openly before any agreement is reached.
How do you handle confidentiality?
All engagements are conducted under strict confidentiality. We do not discuss client matters outside the engagement and formalise confidentiality expectations in our engagement letter. We understand that the subject matter of family business and succession is often sensitive, and we treat it accordingly.
Do you work with businesses outside Kuala Lumpur?
Yes. While our office is in Kuala Lumpur, we work with clients across Malaysia. Engagements typically include in-person sessions as well as remote consultations, structured around what works for the client organisation.
